It is becoming trite to say that it is a challenging semester, but I genuinely hope you are doing well and taking care of yourself in the midst of everything going on around us. Fortunately, COVID cases in the UNLV community are far fewer than the infection rate in Clark County, so we have that to be thankful for this fall.
The pandemic has forced us all to change – in the way we teach; mentor; engage students; and do our research, scholarship, or creative activities.
Please encourage students to participate in the Rebel Grad Slam 3-Minute Thesis Competition, a fast-paced research rumble that challenges students to showcase their research in a condensed and compelling way using only three minutes and one PowerPoint slide. This year’s event will take place virtually Nov. 9-18. Winners of the preliminary rounds will progress to the semi-finals, and winners of the semi-finals will compete in the final round. Scholarships are awarded to winners throughout. Students should sign up by Nov. 2.
Scholarship/Fellowship Application Open
Every year, graduate students are eligible to apply for a variety of merit-based scholarships and fellowships through the Grad Rebel Gateway. Applications are being accepted through Dec. 1 for these scholarships and fellowships. View the scholarships and fellowships on the New Student Funding and Current Student Funding webpages.
FAFSA/Alternate Need Form
The 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Alternate Need Form are available. Please encourage students to file their FAFSA or Alternate Need Form before UNLV's Nov. 1 priority deadline. Students must complete the 2021-22 FAFSA or Alternate Need Form to be considered for financial aid opportunities during fall 2021, spring 2022, and summer 2022.
The annual Graduate Student Life and Climate Survey was recently emailed to students’ Rebelmail account. Please encourage students to take 20 minutes to complete this important survey, which helps the Graduate College and graduate/professional program faculty improve student programming and support. Students who elect to provide their Rebelmail address at the end of the completed survey will be entered in a drawing for one of 10 $1,000 scholarships. The survey must be completed by Dec. 11.

The scholarship and fellowship application portal is now accepting applications for the 2021-22 academic year! Writing Boot Camp
During the week of Aug. 10, more than 20 students participated in the Graduate College's Writing Boot Camp. In partnership with UNLV Libraries and the UNLV Writing Center, the Graduate College has hosted the Writing Boot Camp twice a year for several years now, but this was the first one done virtually.
