By participating in this workshop, participants will learn about Thomas and Kilmann’s conflict theory; explore, through interactive polling and group discussion, how conflict styles can exacerbate disagreements and complicate productive resolutions; and analyze and handle interpersonal conflict more skillfully. Prior to the workshop, participants will take an online assessment to determine their preferred Thomas-Kilmann conflict style.

Sept. 27: Research Impact Challenge: The Researcher’s Guide to Citation-Based Metrics

Metrics, particularly those calculated based on citations, have been used for selecting journals to publish in, evaluation of author and publication prestige, and more.
These measurements of impact are often difficult to navigate, understand when and how to use them, and are frequently subject to bias, exclusivity, and gaming.
This workshop is for participants at any career stage who have questions and want to learn the good, the bad, and the ugly about citation-based metrics.

Sept. 28: Research Impact Challenge: Using Altmetrics to Show Impact Beyond the Citation

In this workshop, participants will discover how alternative metrics, or altmetrics, are used to show the potentially broad reach of published research. Altmetrics can be useful for authors at any career stage and discipline, but are particularly helpful for early-career researchers.
Included will be a live demonstration of Altmetric Explorer, which is a new tool that allows authors to see their works’ impact.
