Feb. 16: Introduction to Open Access Publishing

This workshop will introduce participants to open access article publishing including paid and free options and what choosing one or the other means for authors. UNLV Early Alert
UNLV and the Graduate College have invested in an Early Alert text messaging system that confidentially checks in with students who opt in once a week and provides free wellness and mental health resources. Early Alert asks students to reflect on their emotional, physical, cognitive, relational, academic, and financial wellness. Based on their optional text response, students will receive free, easy-to-access resources to support them and help address their concerns. Learn more and opt in.
iThenticate Available for UNLV Scholars
Looking to protect the integrity of your scholarship and your professional reputation? Use iThenticate, the service that scans your own research, grant proposals, theses, and dissertations for missed citations and other mistakes that could be characterized as plagiarism. iThenticate is free for all UNLV graduate faculty, postdoctoral scholars, doctoral students, and master's students who have completed 15 credits of graduate coursework. Register for an Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID)
ORCID iDs are unique identifiers for researchers that move with them throughout their career, improving visibility of their work. ORCID iDs are quickly becoming standard in academia, with many publishers now requiring them. Learn more and register.
Thesis/Dissertation Office Hours
Students with questions about their thesis or dissertation can take advantage of the Graduate College's thesis and dissertation office hours every Tuesday and Thursday from 12-2 p.m. Email grad.td@unlv.edu at least 48 hours in advance to schedule a virtual appointment.
FAFSA and Alternate Need Form Labs
The UNLV Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships is hosting a series of workshops, both online and in person, to answer any questions students may have regarding FAFSA and Alternate Need Form applications. The in-person workshops will take place Feb. 16, Feb. 24, and March 2 from 3-6 p.m. in Classroom Building Complex-C, Room 129 from 3-6 p.m. The online workshops will take place Feb. 17, Feb. 23, and March 3 from 3-6 p.m. Learn more.
Feb. 21: Applications due for Inspiration, Innovation, Impact: A Celebration of Graduate Student Research
The Inspiration, Innovation, Impact event showcases the best in UNLV graduate student research. For this signature event, a select group of outstanding graduate students from a variety of colleges give short, five-minute, TED-style talks or performances showcasing their research, scholarship, or creative activities. Applicants submit an initial video (no longer than two minutes in length) by Feb. 21. This video should convey who you are, what topic you propose to speak on, and the broader impacts of your research. Learn more.
Feb. 24: UNLV Troesh Business Competition Applications Due
This year, the Troesh Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation will host the inaugural UNLV Troesh Business Competition. The competition gives collegiate entrepreneurs experience in writing a pitch deck about their startup, enhancing their business strategy, and learning the fundamentals of starting a business. The competition will be virtual and hosted on the Startup Tree platform. No pitching is required to enter. There will be both an undergraduate and graduate winner. Learn more.
March 2: Spring 2022 Medallion Deadline
The Graduate College's Medallion Program honors exceptionally involved and high-achieving students. Graduate students who have accumulated 100 points using the point system outlined on the program's webpage can apply for a Medallion to be worn at Commencement. For students graduating in spring 2022, completed application forms must be emailed to the Graduate College by March 2. Learn more.
March 4: Student Veteran Scholars Symposium Applications Due
The Student Veteran Scholars Symposium provides veteran and military member students a welcoming, professional forum for presenting the scholarly and creative work they are pursuing at UNLV. The symposium will take place April 22 in the Lied Library and feature posters, exhibits, and 10-minute presentations and performances from selected applicants, who must be veterans or military members (active duty, National Guard, or Reserves). Feb. 18, 5-7 p.m.: Meet & Eat
The BGSA will be patronizing a Black-owned restaurant each month to contribute to the economic development of Black people. For February, the BGSA will dine at Family Soul Restaurant. Learn more and RSVP.
Feb. 24, 5-6:30 p.m.: Forging the Path: BGSA Alumni Panel
This virtual panel discussion features Black UNLV alumni who will share their experiences of being Black on campus, being a member of BGSA, and life after graduation. Learn more and RSVP.

"Dear Grad Student" is a podcast by grad students, for grad students. Join Elana Gloger, a full-time fifth year doctoral candidate and podcast host, as she chats with fellow grad students about their professional and personal experiences, without taking either too seriously.
