A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan |
Hello friends, and happy fall!
I hope you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and navigating today’s new normal as well as possible. Despite the many challenges we’ve faced since 2020, I am hopeful for the future -- one of health, togetherness, and progress. With the cool breath of fall in the air, a few leaves changing here and there, and a bustling campus, I am so grateful that we’re able to enjoy a more typical semester here at UNLV.
The pandemic stalled many things -- manufacturing, education, healthcare, entertainment, and social activities, to name just a few -- but our UNLV team, particularly our Graduate College in partnership with graduate programs across campus, has soldiered on and is flourishing in so many important ways. One particularly exciting area of progress are our new curricular offerings at the graduate level.
Just this fall semester, we introduced 10 new graduate degree and certificate programs, including the interdisciplinary Master of Science - Data Analytics program, the Master of Science - Cybersecurity & Master of Science - Management Information Systems dual-degree program, the Master of Business Administration & Doctor of Medicine dual-degree program, and the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research.
We now offer more than 185 graduate degree and certificate programs at UNLV to meet the demands of our students and the evolving needs of our 21st century workforce. Our graduate students become experts in their fields so that they can tackle and help solve regional, national, and global challenges. We’re committed to ensuring that our UNLV graduate curriculum supports them to do so.
For example, our new Master of Science - Cybersecurity & Master of Science - Management Information Systems dual-degree program, offered through the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering and the Lee Business School, is helping meet a growing demand. Currently, growing demand at the local, regional, and national levels calls for individuals trained in computers, networks, and risk and security management. The Department of Labor has identified this as one of the most needed professions/skills, yet higher education institutions are not producing graduates as fast as the field is growing. UNLV, recognized as a center of academic excellence for cybersecurity, is helping fill this gap through this new program.
Meanwhile, the new Master of Business Administration & Doctor of Medicine dual-degree program, offered through the Lee Business School and the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, is preparing physicians to deal with the business of healthcare while addressing patients’ medical needs. Increasingly, physicians benefit from business and entrepreneurship training, which is a burgeoning area of interest for medical students.
It’s an exciting time in graduate education at UNLV. With a growth mentality, we are poised to strategically expand and align our curricular offerings to meet the demands of our current and prospective students, and address the labor force needs in our local community, across the region, and throughout the U.S. and beyond. If you are interested in graduate study, if you’re an alum who would like to give a little time to help mentor a student, if you’re an employer who seeks the best and brightest talent, or if you’re a donor at any level who would like to support our students and make a positive impact on the future, I encourage you to reach out.
Finally, the UNLV Homecoming Festival is Wednesday evening, Oct. 20 in Pida Plaza at UNLV. This signature homecoming event is a night of first-class entertainment, complete with a college/school/department showcase in the Campus Courtyard, carnival rides and games, free food, and a beer garden to create the perfect atmosphere to connect and reconnect alumni, students, faculty, staff, and the community. Please stop by to visit us at the Graduate College booth to say hello, meet the team, connect with the grad community, and check out what's new! You can get your Festival ticket for free.
Thank you for your continued interest and support. I am grateful for your engagement and would love to hear from you.
