Oct. 9: Organize and Cite Sources with Zotero
10-11 a.m., Virtual
This one-hour virtual workshop will help participants learn how to use Zotero, a free, open-source program, to keep track of their research sources, organize their notes, and format citations. Priscilla Finley, humanities librarian, will teach participants how to create a Zotero library and give tips on how to seamlessly integrate Zotero into a writing workflow. The workshop will also identify strengths and limitations of Zotero.

Oct. 10: Preparing for Rebel Grad Slam: How to Effectively Translate Your Academic Work for a General Audience
4-5 p.m., Virtual
Graduate students are encouraged to attend a workshop that will help them prepare for the Rebel Grad Slam 3-Minute Thesis Competition, which challenges competitors to present their research, creative, or scholarly activity using only three minutes and one PowerPoint slide. Past finalists and judges will cover strategies for streamlining important aspects of research, designing a slide that will stand out, and presentation pitfalls and successes.

Oct. 11: Leadership Lunch - It’s a Small World After All: Leading in Your Community
The LEAD Team is hosting an event where participants can learn how to be leaders in their communities. Being a source of positive change may sound daunting, but this workshop will help participants realize that it is, in fact, a small world after all.

Oct. 11: Assignments & Discussions: Using Multiple Methods to Provide Meaningful Feedback

In today’s academic world, online learning has become, and will continue to be, a primary course delivery method. It’s imperative to understand how to engage students with multimedia learning in the most effective ways. This workshop will introduce participants to theories and approaches for crafting optimal online learning environments.

An academic job talk is a presentation that candidates give as part of the interview process for faculty positions at universities and research institutions. In this workshop from the Academic Job Search Demystified series, participants will learn how to prepare and deliver a job talk that effectively communicates their academic expertise, engages the audience, and leaves a lasting impression on hiring committees. Participants will also learn key elements of a job talk as well as how to translate their research, teaching, other academic activities, and contribution to their field for a hiring audience.

Graduate and professional students at UNLV are eligible for up to $2,500 for research, travel, project material, and professional development expenses through the Graduate & Professional Student Association sponsorship program. These grants are highly competitive, and this workshop will provide attendees with information that will help them create a fundable application. During this workshop, the Sponsorship Committee will provide information about awards, deadlines, the selection process, eligibility, and tips for creating a great application.

Oct. 14: Maximizing Your Potential: Building a Professional Profile for Career Success
12-1 p.m., Virtual
In this workshop, participants will learn practical strategies from industry experts on how to build professional profiles such as LinkedIn and Handshake. Participants will explore the art of optimizing an online presence, leveraging personal branding for greater visibility, mastering networking techniques to expand professional connections, and identifying ways to continuously grow and develop skills for ongoing career advancement.

UNLV Writing Center Available to Graduate Students
UNLV’s Writing Center can help students get unstuck, brainstorm, organize their work, and ensure their writing makes sense as well as review CVs, resumes, and cover letters. Students no longer need to make an account on Campus Connect before reaching out.
Schedule an in-person or virtual consultation to talk about a paper, even if nothing is written.
Submit to the Online Writing Lab (OWL) to receive written feedback on a paper within a couple of days.

Think you can present your research in just three minutes using one slide? Participate in the Graduate College's Rebel Grad Slam 3-Minute Thesis Competition, where graduate students compete to win over the judges and audience for a chance at scholarship money. This year's weeklong competition will take place Nov. 27-Dec. 1. Learn more and apply by Nov. 6.

Research!America is accepting applications through Oct. 24 for its 2023-24 Civic Engagement Microgrant Program. Grants ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 are available for STEM student- and postdoc-led civic engagement projects.

Grad Fest is a one-stop shopping experience for UNLV graduation. Graduating students can order/purchase a cap and gown, graduation announcements and invitations, class ring, diploma frame, graduation photos (a professional photographer will be on site), and more.
